The NHL has been forced to get creative with their marketing, specifically making an NHL game an enticing event to attend. One such event is the newly founded NHL Winter Classic Game, which takes place outdoors, old school! This nostalgic ploy splits the Red Sea of jersey sales with its newly engineered Winter Classic Throwbacks line. Last year the throwback tussle was between the Red Wings and Blackhawks, and took place at the legendary Wrigley Field. This year? Flyers v. Bruins @ Fenway. Absurd!
My Flyers will wear a white sweater with the black Flyers logo – a flying “P” encircling the orange puck. The sweater has a black nameplate, orange piping down the sleeves and an orange cummerbund band above the waist. The neck has orange-and-black trim and the sleeve cuffs are black. This is very similar to the uniform that the Flyers wore from their inception in 1967 through 1982. Those years featured the Broad Street Bullies, and for those of you unaware of them, think Philly hit squad on ice. Peep this clip of them playing ‘American style’ hockey against the Red Army. Philly and tough go together like Manhattan and poofs. Case in point, Tuff Crew, getting their broad street bully on circa 1987.
