Beats, Rhymes, Life

Today is a slow day, literally nothing has hit my proverbial desk that entitles a sole post. Here are some stories floating around that almost made the cut.

1. Philadelphia Eagles star wide receiver Desean Jackson raps on stage with Freeway in Lancaster, PA

Rappers want to be ballers, ballers want to be rappers. Desean Jackson has dabbled with rap before, having been featured on a Gillie Da Kid track with fellow Philly pro Lou Williams of the Sixers. Guess they rap better than Freeway can ball, just a healthy hypothesis.

2. Black Star rock the Bonnaroo house [Picture thread]

Black Star duo Talib Kweli & Mos Def aka Yasmin Bey reportedly put down a classic show at Bonnaroo this year. Check out a series of dope pictures from that set via G4Mikey. Man, do they look ancient.

3. Two different beefs were highlighted at the BET Awards red carpet interviews. Machine Gun Kelly commented on his bubbling feud with Yelawolf and A$AP Rocky went in on his former producer slash homie SpaceGhostPurrp.

Memorable quote from A$AP: “F him, f— him, straight up. He’s one of those cats, like a lot of guys just hang around me, try to build hype, and when they dip off, start throwing dirt on the young on the blood”

Memorable quote from MGK: ”I love him, man. You gotta respect your elders, and he’s an old man so I gotta give it up, I respect all grandpas around the world doin’ it big. Salute.”

4. The usually flamboyantly braggadocio 2 Chainz reveals overly simple album art for the upcoming Based On A T.R.U. Story

The album is due for an August 14th release, rumored to have collaborations with Kanye West, Drake, Rick Ross, Ludacris, and your momma.

5. Coachella may be leaving Indio, threatens city that 2013 will be last show.

I’ve never gone, but people who have seem to be pretty torn up about this. I doubt it will leave California and may in fact move closer to Los Angeles which would be selfishly sweet. Check the Times for the story.

You Best Believe I Never Forget The Swishers

I’ve been playing Pac Div’s Don’t Mention It (do yourself a favor and download it now at: http://itspacdiv.com/) pretty consistently since it was released for free download in April. It slaps from beginning to end, while managing to hit a variety of subject matter and moods. It most definitely deserves your listen, and probably a full review from us. And while it’s a little too late for a review, it’s never too late to give something a listen. And if one – two months is too old for you, you probably have a very serious downloading problem, and aren’t giving very much of anything a full listen. I know I’ve been that way on a few too many occasions.

Anyways, while pretty much the entire album is impressive, I have been finding my self listening to one song more than the others. “Don’t Forget The Swishers” is a song I think most hip-hop fans can relate to. The lyrics are funny but honest and while the topic is pretty much getting fucked up and hitting on chicks, it’s done in an down to earth and relatable way, rather than saying that every night they put on their $500,000 necklace, roll up to the club on four quarters, buy out the bar, and then run trains on supermodels in the handicapped bathroom stall. In addition, while hip-hop choruses more often than not fail to please me, Pac DIv always seems to do a solid job with theirs. I find this hook enjoyable as hell, and catchier than the clap. I think we’ve all gave the same message or felt the same way as the chorus at at least one point in our lives, but hopefully, much more than that.

ZIF Video OF The Week: Freeway & Jake One: She Makes Me Feel Alright [HD]

This was a much anticipated project for many Freeway and Jake One fans. There is no doubt that apart from the CD packaging, the album did not exceed expectations. Considering the amount of underground/Rhymesayer marketing and hype for Freeway’s project, I have a feeling this may be the end of Freeway, and not the rebirth of an emcee. C’est la vie.

This track makes me feel like having a girlfriend, or loving hip hop, not sure.

Lovable Rappers

People like Method Man. They like U-God. They like GZA. But with all due respect to his Wu-affililates, folks LOVE Ghostface. Ghost’s crime-ladden tales have always been glued together by his vulnerability and insecurity. Whether it’s his weeping for famished children in Africa or his diabetes, Ghost’s narratives have always been fully-loaded and brutally honest metaphors delivered through his coarsely extemporaneous flow.
In general, rappers just aren’t lovable. However, I hypothesize that a few albums from his current effort, Freeway will be the next rapper that people heart. Continue reading

The Stimulus Package for The Whole Damn Industry

Ironically it takes a G from Philly and not a President from Chicago to truly put together a stimulus package that makes sense, let alone cents. Philly fire spitter Freeway has teamed up with hip hop Godsend Jake One. The collaboration has produced a virtual stimulus package for hip hop sonically, however, this will also stimulate the real economy, literally! People will buy this CD. Why? Why buy when you can pirate? Watch the video, and let Rhymesayers show you exactly why son!

Cop the physical copy of this ridiculously marvelous marketing item passing itself off as a CD, everywhere February 15th 2010!

Rappers Gone Muslim

So for those of who you know of Loon, the Harlem Bad Boy who’s more boy than bad really, you may find these clips interesting. Loon recently became a follower of Islam, a practicing Muslim. Apart from an obvious draw to acclaimed Muslim rapper Freeway, there is some substance to this spiritual development. These guys actually went to Saudi Arabia and a whole slew of other Arab countries. And yes I understand Arab doesn’t equal Muslim, but these were Arab Muslim countries, so chill. Many bloggers are finding this story relatively fascinating, I am among them. Not for the feel good reasons either. I’m pretty interested in the possibility that the increasingly growing trend of American rappers turning towards Islam will have a pragmatic effect on U.S. stigmas about Muslims. And not a necessarily positive one either, it’s not like rappers have an inherent ability to convey spiritual thoughts through a social platform that is a mic and a stage, oh wait…

Peep a list of Islamic Rappers after the jump.

Did you happen to hear that last Loon track? Yikes…

Birds of Prey

birds of prey

Both of these guys come from cities whose football teams are named after birds……..dang, I guess I know nothing else about Seattle or Philadelphia; so much for my comparison as a lead-in. Nonetheless, Jake One and Freeway have joined talons (you like that?) for a mixtape dubbed The Beat Made Me Do It! .

Brother Ali + Freeway + Joell Ortiz = Best@It

3560863118_a37f754592

Free warms it up, Joell gets the blood flowing, and Ali straight bludgeons the track.  The leaks off of Brother Ali’s fourth full-length album “US” have been a bit grandiose and self-righteous (I mean, he has a song on his upcoming album called “The Preacher”).  But for one song, at least, it seems he’s summoned some of that “Champion Sound,” not content to let a battle MC like Joell Ortiz outdo him on his own album.

We can all thank White Van Musician Jake One for linking Brother Ali with Freeway.  Throw Joell in the mix and you got chemistry.
