I always feel so left out when Throwback Thursday’s roll around. Don’t get it twisted I appreciate paying homage to the past, frankly, that’s where all the damn gold is. I just always end up having a mental breakdown when I try and pick just one track to showcase, when there’s a plethora of choice, I usually stumble. So, thank you OME, for making this easy. Dope track, dope remix. I’ve said this time and time again, this guy doesn’t make enough music to supply the demand.
Ras G is the #1 ranked astronaut in the Afrikan Space Program. For those of you who can’t peep your favorite cosmonaut at Low End Theory on the regular, it is a must to check in with this new and free EP, download it in it’s entirety here. Also, we are lining up some time with Open Mike Eagle to discuss his movements, including his recent trip with Ras G to Uganda, sounds ridiculously intriguing.
It’s like a dream, and I’m a rapper. Afterschool, I spend time at Hellfyre Club. I like donuts – I’m in a parking lot – I’m tripping. The Busdriver is teaching me about genitals and pampers and chia pet dander. I understand that I need this lesson. He tells me he’s Werner Herzog and I believe everything he says – I’m mesmerized. He takes me to a special tutor (Open Mike Eagle) who tells me he’s P.T. Anderson – a genius diaper salesman who farts fairness. Nocando has multiple personality disorder of the filmaker variety – apparently the hoes like John Singleton, but who knows how the policeman would like his ice pick?
I wish more people would take Hellfyre Club lessons.
Simple visuals punctuated with tight editing to an infectious beat showcasing some of the LA underground’s finest lyricists.
Looks like today is all about LA based rappers with new minimalist videos. This track was dedicated to all of OME’s friends who may/are losing their damn minds. To be frank the video itself made me lose my mind for a few minutes, in a “hurts my eyes like crazy” kind of way. Nevertheless this album was played with vigor this summer by moi. Super stoked that there have been multiple videos off of it. 4NML HSPTL momentum continues as he will be touring with 2012 breakout artist Busdriver throughout October, LA come check it out on the 11th at The Bootleg.
This track is my personal favorite off the 4NMLHSPTL album, likely due to my appreciation of sardonic quips. Here are 5 thoughts about this video that I hope matter, a little.
1. Shoutout to the director of this video, this was not the direction I saw this video going, but there was plenty of candid footage to intermix with the wildly sarcastic scene with the honeys in the bikinis, dope.
2. Speaking of the bikinis, it makes me smile to think about how they must have showed up to the “rap video/pool scene” with all sorts of expectations, plenty of racks on racks references and some kush getting blown. Nah, you girls got some artists who used you effectively to prove a point about the lameness that aesthetics such as yours propagates.
3. What’s up with Has-Lo, can this dude put out a major project or something already? Streets are ready.
4. Watch the video muted. It looks like an extremely typical rap video.
5. Watch the video with the audio jacked. Shit’s dope isn’t it?
The new video from Dark Time Sunshine (comprised of Onry Ozzborn of Grayskul (Rhymesayers) and producer Zavala) is an example of music videos evolving to meet the demands of an ever increasingly impatient consumer. This video is more Twin Peaks than Cash Money video shoot, a fact customers appreciate, including us. Also, heard that Open Mike Eagle will be joining their tour with Aesop Rock, that tour just went into warp drive.
As a general rule animated music videos fall flat due to budgetary constraints. OME is one of those artists that works hard at networking, his likability factor helps cement those relationships. I do not doubt this extremely well made video was a product of such a relationship. Musicians reap the benefits of their characters, for Mike Eagle, that means mucho mitzvahs. Dope video.
A well placed leak off the upcoming and highly anticipated 4NML HSPTL release from Open Mike Eagle. Apparently this will only be available via the digital release (or download below), not sure I get that one, I’m assuming a late addition to the project was Danny Brown. Either way, the Fake Four outfit will drop the project June 26th. Listening to this track you can see the stark contrast in both style and mode that both emcees bring to the table. OME, focused and deliberate. Danny Brown, a tad fortuitous with a dash of callousness. Together they beat this track up, GI Joe never had a chance.
J.U.i.C.E. is proud to announce that we are partnering with Amagezi Germanyi Youth Association (AGYA) on an international hip-hop artist exchange program that will bring Los Angeles-based MC and Hellfyre Club recording artist, Open Mike Eagle, and Los Angeles-based beatmaker and Brainfeeder recording artist, Ras G, to work with Ugandan rapper Mon MC, youth artists, and other local musicians in Uganda for three weeks in May of 2012.
Can’t think of someone I’d rather endorse on a mission to the great continent. Stop paying Invisible Children for a month and help OME get to Africa here.
