The New Era includes Wale and John Mayer

Starter jackets are dope.

Interviewing Portable Payback recently I recall Marc 7 making a strong point that he was upset that Jurassic 5 had turned down an opportunity to work with the Dave Matthews Band a few years back. At first I was a little taken a back by the emphatic point Marc was making about working with a fluffy rock band who was known for making Caucasian girls swoon across our sketchy land. And then I realized that he wanted to work with them BECAUSE they had that effect on those girls heart rates. In other words, the color that matters is green. If you can ride the gravy train that is the coattails of an industry supported giant like DMB or in Wale’s case, John Mayer, than you hop on board with a smile on your face and a bib around your neck.

This new Wale track with John Mayer is not the only time these two have partaken in the same activity. Both of these musicians jumped on the New Era phenomenon of commissioning musician edition fitted caps. The Mayer fitted was straight wack, but the Wale one was pretty ill, having co-opted the Washington Nationals logo and all. Peep both fitteds after the jump, and for the record, I think Ped is still selling his Wale cap. The track will be on Wale’s Attention Deficit LP, slated for a November 10th, 2009 release.

  1. I’m pretty sure the point Marc was making was that he wanted the creative freedom to work with DMB and not be deemed a sellout by the other members. I don’t think he was saying “let’s make money,” and nobody else wanted to.

  2. Maybe. He seemed pretty emphatic about working with DMB, if that was for creative reasons, fuck me.

    Glad you’re reading though 😉

  3. I thought J5 did work with DMB on that song “Work It Out.” Also that John Mayer hat is shitty!! who, where and why ould anybody consider wearing it? Who okayed this hat? We’re in a recession and I say that person gets the axe.

  4. Jake,
Just ran across this article and truth be told i never said i was upset because we passed on working with DMB as a matter of fact i was the one who told the band to add him to the song after Numark played me the beat. If i make a musical decision its the music first and then the chips. This is the exact reason why i love this new Portable Payback shit Soup and i are doing cause we dont really give ah shit about what anyone has to say or let the fans dictate our sound. In this case i just had to let it be known that i never said that and if i did do something for the money i got no shame in my game playboy, ill straight up say it.

    Marc7

  5. I said “Im not gonna PASS UP the oppurtunity to work with Dave Matthews. You said and i QUOTE “I recall Marc 7 making a strong point that he was upset that Jurassic 5 had turned down an opportunity to work with the Dave Matthews.” Why would i say that when we already worked with the Dave. We asked and he said yes. The 4 minute mark only proves your wrong Homie. Heres another assumption u made and an untruth. ” And then I realized that he wanted to work with them BECAUSE they had that effect on those girls heart rates. In other words, the color that matters is green. Dont assume something about me player just ask me. and u do make shit up homie so you can make ya story sound better.

  6. When you cover a plethora of artists, you have to make assumptions and judgments. If we took all artists at their word, nobody’s shit stinks and the music industry is booming.

Fact is, a lot of crap is made, plenty of pitiful decisions are made, and we call it like “we” “see” it.

I appreciate you clarifying it, a, cuz it means you’re reading, which is dope. And, b, cuz I honestly think people didn’t get what you were trying to say, at least me, and now we do.

As far as making our stories sound better at the price of integrity. That’s a low blow, if anything, we’re some of the only cats calling people out on their bullshit, if artists don’t like it, we’re doing our job. Industry cats have enough yes men.

  7. Judgements i can agree with but a journalist should never make an assumption. Thats the whole point of an interview and u got my number. Umma end it like this cause this subject is about to be moot to me. The bottomline is i didnt say what u said i said. No more no less.
