Here’s an admission, YOLA was my favorite release during TDE Fan Appreciation Week. Jay Rock reminds me of that quintessential reserved dude in a group of guys who’s constantly underestimated. Then the group gets in a jam and reserved dude whoops ass and takes names. He has a unique ability to gracefully straddle that border between street legitimacy and white people approved. And by the latter, I don’t mean to offend, in essence I mean non-pop music that has that still meaningful market of consumers that are for the most part college educated and looking to maintain enough “Yolo” in their lives in what appears to be a never ending competition to stay 25. You’ll hear this track when cruising down Sunset and creeping down Crenshaw, exactly where this steak sauce was meant to be slathered.
